Semester 2, Week 2: (Part 1) The Nostagia Garden

Brief: Design a small garden from a word selected from a brainstorming exercise

Design: I chose the word ‘nostalgia’. I designed an inward looking space that focussed on reflection. There are 2 separate seating areas and another meditative area. Selected plants are highly scented given the important role of the olfactory system in accessing memories. Other plants and trees provide produce, giving another dimension to the garden and more opportunities to reminisce over freshly baked plum pie or a sloe gin. A variety of Rustic Materials are used and the location of the water feature means the trickle of water can be heard from every corner of the garden. Trees and trellis provide dappled shade, casting a blanket of ever changing shadows over every surface it touches. The number of focal points created can be filled with sculptures and the obstructed lines of sight encourage the user to venture out and enjoy the garden.
